After a record day in which the state added a high number of new Covid cases, the state's top doctors continue to sound the alarm about how the virus could quickly flood New Mexico hospitals in the coming weeks. In a presentation to state health officials on Thursday, Dr. John D. O'Donnell, director of the Department of Health and Human Services in Santa Cruz, warned that hospital beds in New Mexico will run out in a few days as the state continues to add more than 1,000 new flu cases, including illnesses. The 2013 report, submitted to the Legislative Council Finance Committee by the Office of Emergency Medical Services and its allies, lists the need for additional doctors in New Mexico.
The agency also said the number of medical assistants in New Mexico was insufficient. One solution to alleviate the shortage is to increase the use of physician assistance.
New Mexico is one of the states with a growing population of physician assistants in the United States, according to the Department of Health and Human Services (DWS). The US health authority CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) reported that there is a shortage of junior doctors entering the labour market. The D'Antoni's salary data also show that salaries for medical assistants in New Mexico and the rest of the country vary widely. In 2015, the experienced physician assistant in New York City earned an average of $117,440, while the junior physician assistant earned an average of $68,510 in 2015 and $72,500 in 2016.
According to a 2009 paper in Human Resources and Health that analyzed the salaries of medical assistants in New Mexico and the rest of the United States, the average salary of a physician assistant in the state was the third lowest of all countries. The analysis suggests that there is a shortage of junior doctors, particularly in junior doctors.
