I was 22 years old when I started my journalistic career in Santa Cruz, a small town in New Mexico known for its huge oil refinery and 37 churches. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the rustic, independent population produced some of the most beautiful landscapes in the western United States, as well as a lot of natural beauty. During this period, the area around Santa Cruz de la Canada was described as rich in orchards, irrigated by a variety of rivers and streams, and home to a large number of small farms.
Spanish haciendas and ranchos in the area were created by the explorer Juan Onate, who founded Ohkay Owingeh in 1598. This was the second villa built by the Spanish in New Mexico, the first was Santa Fe and it was one of only three during the colonial period. The Hispanic settlement was refounded by Don Juan de la Cruz and his sons after the death of their father in 1807.
In 1807, insurgent forces assassinated the governor of New Mexico, Juan de la Cruz, assigned by the United States, and began the Taos revolt. The rebels beheaded Perez, killed all his government officials and then appointed Genizaro Jose Gonzalez as the new governor.
With the support of Anglo-American merchants in Santa Fe, New Mexico-born Manuel Armijo defeated the rebels in the Battle of Santa Cruz in 1807. Perez led a response force that beat them before reaching Santa Cruz, but not before his death.
The occupying forces in Santa Fe quickly moved an army under Colonel Sterling Price north to stop the uprising. First Colonel Price's troops met a poorly armed and trained rebel force in Santa Cruz, who subdued them with cannons.
An influential member of the community formed a militia when Perez had his brother-in-law, former New Mexico Governor John Lopez, jailed in 1837. After his release, he moved to Santa Cruz, with the increased ability to meet in his new home in the hills above the city.
It was unusual to see the masjid working side by side, and Guadalupe García, Gloria's wife, was a member of one of them. Obviously not everyone was satisfied with the transformation and the temple was destroyed several times, despite the support of the neighborhood.
